Universal Works
Universal Works is the perfect reflection of the style and personality of its founder, David Keyte. He started out as a sign-painter, a coal miner, and then went to work for Paul Smith and Maharishi for 20 years. This blend of workwear and traditional English sartorial style is evident in each collection. What's great is that David Keyte is passionate about manufacturing processes; each garment is made honestly and carefully by skilled craftsmen.
With David’s life work reading like a description of the company's DNA, Universal Works is about the mixing of ideas; understanding heritage and context, underpinned by contemporary needs and aesthetics. Champions of skilled, small-scale production, they produce garments in the right place, both in the UK, the EU and overseas, working only with factories they trust, admire and are proud to be associated with. The company also gives David & his wife Stephanie an opportunity to collaborate with amazing people from artists to writers and anyone in between, a process that inspires continual growth and education. After initially selling to ten retailers, they have gained a substantial following and Universal Works is now stocked from Los Angeles to Seoul, to right here in Montreal at Clark Street Mercantile.
